Design Process

For this production my director wanted the costumes to be designed with the traditional Elizabethan silhouette. I wanted the feel of this show to be much like the Twelfth Night festival, fun and full of libation, and so each character’s color scheme was inspired by a different alcoholic beverage. Olivia’s court all being inspired by fermented beverages such as wine, beer, or cider while members of Orsino’s court were inspired by distilled beverages. Sebastian and Viola were both inspired by port wine, a fermented beverage that is fortified with distilled alcohol, this was chosen to represent how the two are torn between both courts over the course of the story. Feste, one of my favorite designs, was inspired by Absinthe as it is a beverage that is said to cause hallucinations, I felt that this fit best with Feste because he is a trickster type character that knows things the other characters don’t.
